READING
Identifies key ideas of text
Asks and answers questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers
Recounts stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures and determine the moral and explain how it is conveyed
Determines the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text
Recounts the key details and explain how they support the main idea
Determines the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 3 topic or subject area
Compares and contrasts relationships or actions across and within texts
Describes characters in a story (traits motivations, feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events
Describes logical connections between particular sentences and paragraphs in a text
Compares and contrasts the most important points and key details presented in two texts on the same topic
Can read grade level texts with appropriate fluency and understanding.
Identifies and knows the meaning of most common prefixes and suffixes
Decodes words with common Latin suffixes
Decodes multi-syllable words
Reads grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words
Reads with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension
Reads on-level text with purpose and understanding
Uses context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary
WRITING
Writes an opinion, narrative, and informational piece
Writes opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons
Introduces the topic or text being written about, states an opinion, and creates an organizational structure that lists reasons
Writes informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas clearly
Writes on a topic using descriptive details to support main idea
Provides reasons that support the opinion
Develops a topic with facts, definitions, and details
Establishes a situation and introduce a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally
